Can you get your tongue to twist the Cockney accent for Sweeney Todd? Or the complexity of Assassin, Leon Czolgosz? What does it take to create an accent for a character?
This workshop will explore the key features of some of the most important accents for musical theatre & the work of Sondheim, breaking them down to see what makes them different. Participants will be given lots of practical tips and techniques for changing accents and applying them to character work.
Irene is a voice and acting coach. She holds an MA in Voice Studies from Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. Her teaching includes actor training for theatre, voice and movement for performance, accent and dialect, vocal health awareness & public speaking and she is influenced by the work of Kristin Linklater, Michael Chekhov, Catherine Fitzmaurice, Cicely Berry & Barbara Houseman.
Previous accent coaching work includes: The Glass Menagerie (Dir. Emma Jordan, Everyman Cork, August 2023) & Graham Norton’s Holding (Dir. Kathy Burke, ITV Studios, April 2022). In addition to these projects, Irene also works extensively delivering voice & accent workshops to a wide range of and clients in Ireland.
Irene lectures in voice & acting at MTU Cork School of Music for the BA Theatre & Drama Studies and Musical Theatre degrees.
