PAUL MONAGHAN: SONDHEIM’S MEN

Saturday 07th October 2023
Location: Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny
This Performance Masterclass will be delivered by West End star Paul Monaghan, exploring the songs of Sondheim’s female-identifying characters.

Paul first worked with Stephen Sondheim in 1998 while rehearsing the original production of Hey Mr. Producer in London and enjoyed a long-distance friendship with him that lasted until his sad passing in 2021. He worked with him again while doing a rehearsed reading of the last musical Sondheim wrote, Bounce – which subsequently became Road Show.

Some of Paul’s credits include: The Bridges of Madison County (Menier Chocolate Factory), Man of La Mancha (London Coliseum), La Cage Aux Folles (UK Tour), Cats (International Tour/London Palladium), A Man of No Importance (Union/Arts Theatre), Fame (Irish National Tour), Aspects of Love (Olympia Theatre/Cork Opera House), Les Misérables (Palace Theatre, UK Tour, 10th Anniversary Concert), The Phantom of the Opera (Manchester Opera House/Playhouse Edinburgh, 25th Anniversary Concert), Jesus Christ Superstar (Olympia Theatre).

Paul’s other Sondheim credits include A Little Night Music (Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm), Into The Woods (The Baker), Follies (Ben), Side By Side by Sondheim (Male 1), Company (Larry), Anyone Can Whistle (Cooley), Passion (Major Rissolli), Assassins (Union Theatre) and Sweeney Todd (Sweeney) – where he first met and played opposite Sondheim Festival Director, Christine Scarry as the Beggarwoman!

This open masterclass will take place onstage at the The Watergate Theatre from 2pm-5pm on Saturday, 7 October. Observer tickets only are available through the website.
