Over the years, Kíla has developed a special connection with Kilkenny through various performances and collaborations. Notably, they have been featured in the lineup for the Kilkenny Tradfest, highlighting their ongoing relationship with the city’s cultural scene. Their collaborations with Kilkenny-based animation studio Cartoon Saloon have further strengthened this bond. Kíla contributed to the soundtracks of acclaimed films such as “The Secret of Kells” and “Song of the Sea,” both produced by Cartoon Saloon.
Formed at school in Dublin’s late 1980’s, the Award-winning band, Kíla, are heralded as one of Ireland’s most innovative and exciting bands. Their unique sound has been ever-evolving; rooted in tradition yet inspired by a myriad of influences and ideas from all around the world. Kila fuses the effects of their own melodies and Irish language lyrics, Irish folk instruments such as whistles, fiddles, Uilleann pipes, bones and bodhrán with djembe, congas, drums, mandolins, brass, and acoustic/electric/bass guitars. Their eight members come from different musical backgrounds of traditional, classical, and rock. The result is a fresh blend of freewheeling instrumentals, furious jigs, and primal rhythms that transcend the traditional boundaries of Irish music.
Kíla’s frequent performances in Kilkenny, including events like Kilkenny Tradfest, have made them a beloved presence in the city’s vibrant music scene. Their dynamic shows and collaborative projects continue to enrich Kilkenny’s cultural landscape, making them a significant and cherished part of the community.
