Weaving History: Exploring the History and Legacy of the wool trade in Kilkenny

In the 16th century, John Rothe was a prominent wool merchant who imported wool to be treated and woven at his own mill on the banks of the river Nore. The skill of spinning, weaving and felting has undergone a revival in recent years.

Rothe House will welcome Mary O’Rourke, an experienced textile artist and designer who lives and works on her family sheep farm in the Dublin Mountains. Mary is a member of the Irish Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, who will ‘weave’ stories of the wool trade of years past and demonstrate the craft of spinning.

This will be an interactive, hands-on event, allowing audiences to learn more about the cultural importance of this industry and its long connection with Kilkenny.
